Expert Answers about Chevrolet Trailer Bearings Races Seals Caps

  • Assembly Order for Bearings, Races, and Seals for Trailer Hub # 34822BX
  • The order of assembly is as follows (from the inside out). First, put the inner race in the back side of the hub, followed by the inner bearing, and then the seal. Insert the hub onto the spindle. Then, insert the outer race, followed by the outer bearing, then the washer, nut, and pin. The grease cap goes on last. It looks like you are putting the race in the wrong place. I have included a link to a video that will show you the process. Also, all the parts you have listed are compatible....

See the help article I've attached that explains the entire process of replacing bearings, races, and seals. I've also attached a video on repacking bearings and installing grease seals you may find helpful.

  • How to Remove Bearing Races on a Trailer Hub
  • The bearing races on a trailer hub, like the Trailer Hub Assembly, part # 8-258-5UC1, are removable, they are not built into the hub. I am including a link to a FAQ page on wheel bearings, races, and seals. Also, a link to a video of removing and reinstalling bearings, races, and seals. It will show, starting at the 2 minute and 5 second mark, how to remove a bearing race. You might also try to rent from an auto parts store a bearing/race removal and installation tool, or you might see...

  • Trouble Removing Bearings From Older Trailer Hub
  • In order to gain access and inspect the bearings on your trailer, you will first need to remove the hub itself. Older hubs like what you have that have accumulated a nice coat of rust can definitely be a bit harder to remove, likely requiring some tough love. To knock the dust cap out of place on your hub you will want to spin the hub around while you use a mallet or hammer to tap the cap in a few different places. Hopefully doing this a few times will let you remove the cap the rest...

  • Remove, Inspect, and Reinstall Trailer Bearings, Races, and Seals
  • If you are replacing your existing hubs with Trailer Hub Assembly, # 8-91-05UC1, you will just need to remove the old hub without having to remove the races. The hubs we carry come with the races already in their proper places. If you are replacing bearings, races, and seals you will need to knock out the old races. I have linked a video that shows how our installer goes about this task. It will also show you how to put everything back together. This hub will fit if your trailer accepts...

  • How To Convert Oil Bath Hubs on 3700 Lb Axle Over to Grease
  • Converting an oil bath hub to grease couldn't be simpler. Just drain the oil, clean and inspect the bearings and races and pack the bearings with a good quality grease like the LMX # L11390. The # 168255TB seal you mentioned is typically used by 3700 lb marine hubs which use a # L68149 and # L44649 bearing and a # L68110 and # L44610 race. We offer the replacement races, seals and bearings if you need them.

  • Can Races and Bearings be Moved Closer Together Inside of a Boat Trailer Hub
  • The races in a hub are usually pressed in already at the factory because driving them in properly requires experience and the proper tools. I strongly advise not attmepting to do this yourself. Also, the inside of a hub is tapered and the races will only go in so far before they cannot go in any further. The bearings ride on the spindle so you cannot adjust their positions. The issue you are experiencing does come up sometimes on boat trailers. If you can tell me the inner and outer bearing...

  • How Often Do Seals Need to be Replaced on Bearings with Bearing Buddies
  • The Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors # BB2441 provide premium protection for your wheel bearings. It is still recommended that you inspect the bearings, races, and seals every 12 months or 12,000 miles to ensure reliable performance on your trailer. Seals are typically designed to last the lifetime of your trailer but may need to be replaced for a number of reasons. If the seal is no longer round or the rubber seems to be dry rotted, the seal will have to be replaced. Removing the grease...

  • Bearings for 7,000 lb Dexter Axle and is Press Needed to Install
  • For a 7,000 lb axle with a hub such as Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 42866UC3-EZ you need Inner Bearing # 25580, Inner Race # 25520, Outer Bearing # 14125A and Outer Race # 14276. You will also need Grease Seal # GS-2125DL (2.125" inner diameter) or # GS-2250DL (2.250" inner diameter) though the only way to know this for certain is to check the part number on the seal itself or use digital caliper to measure your spindle where the seal rides. A press isn't necessary for installation,...

  • Do New Trailer Bearings, Races, and Seals have to be Cleaned First Before Packing them With Grease
  • There is no need to clean off the bearing, races, or seals such as those that come in bearing kit # BK2-100. You can start packing them with grease right away. If they are dirty or you just want to make sure they are clean then I recommend using some spray brake cleaner available at any auto parts store. I have linked our help article on grease for you. To limit the mess when packing bearings you can use a packing tool such as # PTW1218. I have linked a video review for you.

  • How to Install Races in a Hub Assembly
  • We do not carry a tool that will help install your races, though I can pass on some information for you that might be helpful. To install your races, this is what you'll want to do, according to our help article on replacing bearings, races and seals on a trailer hub (which I'll link for you). First, place the race in the hub, thin edge towards the outside. Carefully tap in the race until it is level with the hub. After the race is level, the old race can be used to push the new race farther...

  • Are the Races Pressed Into the Hub
  • Yes, the races come pressed in the hub. You will only have to insert and pack the bearings (check out part # L70025) and press in the grease seal. A hammer and a small block helps when tapping in the grease seal. We also have a 7-Piece installation set, part # PTW83020, that comes in handy if you do your own trailer maintenance.

  • Proper Direction To Install A Hub Seal On Trailer
  • When replacing a grease seal, the metal part of the seal will face towards the inside of the trailer and the rubber part of the seal will face toward the back side of the wheel. The air side of the seal is the flat side of the seal and faces out when it is installed in the hub. The item you selected, Oil Seal, part # 9103309, is designed to be used with hubs that use gear lube instead of grease. If you can send me the inner and outer bearing numbers that are stamped on the bearings, and...

  • Should There be a Gap Between Grease Seal and Bearing on Trailer Hub
  • The grease seal and your inner bearing should not be in contact with each other. There needs to be a gap between them. The grease seal doesn't have to be perfectly flush, sometimes it sits down in there slightly. Still, that only works if it isn't touching the bearing. You're going to have to remove the grease seal and install one again. I recommend using something like a 2x4 to drive it in. This will keep you from driving it in too far so it sits flush like it should and won't contact...

  • Should There be a Space Between the Bearing and Seal on a Hub
  • Although there is no specific measurement for that space between the bearing and grease seal, when installing the seal you will only insert it enough so that it is flush with the hub. This is the same case if you are installing the Bearing Kit # DL21792 that you referenced. I have attached a video of a seal being replaced that you can use as a reference. Also, you will want to be sure that the bearings and seals that you use for replacements are the exact same as what you have now.

  • Grease Seal Inner Diameter is 1/8 of an Inch Too Small
  • My guess is you have the incorrect bearing kit. Kit # BK3-300 with Seal 10-36 # RG06-070 and Kit # BK3-310 with Seal # GS-2125DL have the same bearing numbers but the seals have different inner diameters. Seal # GS-2125DL has an inner diameter of 2.125 inches and Seal 10-36 # RG06-070 has an inner diameter of 2.250 inches. A difference of exactly 1/8 of an inch. If this is the case the solution is to get # GS-2125DL seals.
